Villarreal ended Bayern Munich’s 25 game unbeaten away run in European competition as they beat Julian Nagelsmann’s men 1-0 at the Ceramica in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.
Interestingly, it was Unai Emery at PSG who had handed the Bavarians their last CL defeat on the road back in 2017, and it was again an Emery coached side that triumphed over the German champions here.
The solitary goal on the evening came from Arnaut Danjuma, who diverted Dani Parejo’s effort from close range in the 8thminute. Despite having lesser possession and shots, it was Villarreal who created the more clear-cut chances, and with some better composure in front of goal, they could’ve won this by a bigger margin.
Gerard Moreno hit the post from distance, and also had a shot blocked by some desperate Bayern defending. Danjuma went close after Moreno’s twin chances, as did Alfonso Pedraza, who spurned a glorious opportunity following a fine counter attack three minutes from time.
Bayern will now play Augsburg at home over the weekend while Villarreal will square off against Athletic. The two teams will meet in the second leg at the Allianz next week.
