Switzerland beat Serbia in a five-goal thriller in their final group game to seal their spot in the Round of 16. Leaders Brazil surprisingly lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the other fixture, but Tite’s men still finished top of the group, with the Swiss having to settle for second and a clash against Portugal in the Round of 16.
The first half produced four goals- the Swiss took the lead through Granit Xhaka, only for Serbia to fight back through goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic.
Breel Embolo equalised for Switzerland on the stroke of half time, and Remo Freuler scored what was to be the winning goal just three minutes after the interval.
A total of eleven yellow cards were shown in the game- 7 to Serbia and four to the Swiss. Interestingly, if the Swiss had scored one more goal, they would’ve finished top of the group and not Brazil, thus earning them a potentially easier Ro16 clash against South Korea.
Brazil’s game didn’t have a goal till the 92nd minute, with Vincent Aboubakar netting to make Cameroon the first African nation to beat the South American giants at a World Cup.
