Scotland claimed their first win over Spain in nearly 40 years as they upset La Furia Roja 2-0 at Hampden. Both the Scottish goals came from the boot of Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay as Steve Clarke’s men created history at Hampden.
Spain made eight changes to the side that had beaten Norway a few days ago. A mistake from Spurs defender Pedro Porro in the 7th minute cost the visitors- he slipped at a crucial juncture, allowing Liverpool left back Andy Robertson to cut the ball back into the area, and McTominay’s cool finish put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
Lyndon Dykes should’ve doubled Scotland’s advantage just before half time, but blazed over. However, another excellent finish from McTominay early in the second half saw Scotland go 2-0 up, and they held on to inflict Spain’s first defeat in European qualifying since 2014. It was also Scotland’s first ever win over the Iberian side ince 1984.
The result means that Scotland lead Group A after two rounds of fixtures. Their next game is away at Norway in June. The Norwegians are third in the group currently, having lost 3-0 to Spain and drawn 1-1 against Georgia, but they were without Erling Haaland for those fixtures.
