Harry Kane scored four goals as England thrashed San Marino 10-0 in Serravalle to book their World Cup spot as Group I winners. Kane’s goals- two of them coming from the penalty spot, also saw the Spurs forward go level with Gary Lineker in England’s all-time goal scorer list- only Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton have scored more.
Harry Maguire’s early header and Filippo Fabri’s unwitting own goal from Bukayo Saka’s shot saw England go 2-0 inside 15 minutes and Kane’s four put them 6-0 up at half time.
With the result of the game pretty much beyond doubt, manager Gareth Southgate made three substitutions at half time, with one of them seeing Conor Gallagher make his senior debut as a replacement for Kalvin Phillips.
The goals kept coming- Emile Smith Rowe and Tyrone Mings netted for the first time at international level, and further strikes from Tammy Abraham and Saka saw the Three Lions hit double figures for the first time since 1964, when they beat the United States by the same 10-0 margin.
There could’ve been a maiden international goal for Jude Bellingham as well, but it was chalked off following a VAR review, with the referee deeming Abraham to have committed a foul in the buildup.
