PSV’s 100% start to the new season was broken as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Rangers in the first leg of their Champions League playoff tie at Ibrox. The Dutch side came into the game on the back of five successive wins across all competitions, including a Super Cup triumph over league champions Feyenoord, but had to settle for a draw in the Scottish capital.
Peter Bosz’s side dominated possession and attempts, but went behind against the run of play, with an uncharacteristic error from Ibrahima Sangare costing them dear on the stroke of half time. Abdallah Sima’s outrageous finish from the edge of the box put the Gers 1-0 up.
Sangare atoned for his error by equalising for the visitors on the hour mark, aided by a fine dummy from Ismael Saibari that caught the Rangers defence napping.
As PSV pushed for a second goal, a fine counter attacking move from Todd Cantwell and Cyriel Dessers saw substitute Rabbi Matondo find the back of the net for the hosts in the 76th minute.
However Luuk de Jong nodded home from a corner in the 80th minute, ensuring a repeat of the same scoreline (2-2) from the two sides’ meeting in last season’s Champions League.
