Manchester United 5-4 Lyon Match Report

Manchester United completed a stunning comeback in second half injury time to beat Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 on one of the great European nights at Old Trafford. Having drawn the first leg 2-2 in France, United progressed 7-6 on aggregate and will now meet Athletic Bilbao in the last four.

United started brilliantly and were 1-0 up within the first ten minutes thanks to a well worked goal that was finished off by Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Bruno Fernandes then rattled the bar with an audacious volley effort, but United were rewarded for their dominance when Diogo Dalot doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time.

Lyon though rung the changes and were rewarded when they scored twice in a six-minute second half spell, first through Corentin Tolisso and then through Nicolas Tagliafico. Tolisso’s late dismissal for a foul on Leny Yoro reduced the visitors to ten men, but they silenced the Old Trafford crowd with goals from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette go 4-2 up in extra time.

However a foul from Thiago Almada and intervention from VAR saw Bruno Fernandes make it 3-4 from the spot, and substitute Kobbie Mainoo curled in a fabulous equaliser in the 120th minute. Brazilian Casemiro, who was fouled for the Bruno penalty, then delivered a cross that was headed in by Harry Maguire as United completed a remarkable comeback to win 5-4.
