Galatasaray claimed their first ever European win on English soil as they came from behind to upset Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford. The Turkish giants could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty from Mauro Icardi, who atoned for his miss by slotting home what was to be the winner three minutes later.
United went ahead in the 17th minute with Marcus Rashford’s cross finding strike partner Rasmus Hojlund, who nodded home from close range. Galatasaray equalised through former United old boy Wilfried Zaha, who held off Diogo Dalot before producing an acrobatic finish.
Hojlund was impressive all evening and had a goal disallowed before showing his pace to put United back midway through the second half. The Red Devils’ lead didn’t last long though, with Kerem Akturkoglu putting Gala back on level terms in the 71st minute.
A minute of madness from United keeper Andre Onana saw Casemiro red carded and the referee point to the spot, but fortunately for the home side, Icardi fluffed his lines from the spot.
He however made no mistake three minutes later with a lovely chipped finish, and the visitors’ 3-2 win means that United have now started the group stages with two successive defeats for the first time in their history.
