Ralf Rangnick suffered his first defeat as Manchester United manager as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat the Red Devils 1-0 at Old Trafford. The victory was Wolves’ first at OT since 1980 and saw the Midlands outfit register 15 shots in the opening half, the most by any visiting side at the venue since official records began being kept in 2004.
Wolves dominated the opening 45, with David de Gea clearly the busier keeper. The Spanish stopper was forced into good saves by Daniel Podence, Nelson Semedo and Ruben Neves as the visitors kept up the pressure.
Wolves’ winner came on 82 minutes through Joao Moutinho, with the veteran midfielder drilling a low shot into the bottom corner after Phil Jones’ initial headed clearance had fallen to him at the edge of the box.
United’s best chances went to Bruno Fernandes- the Portuguese star was first denied by the bar midway through the second half, and his stoppage time free kick was brilliantly saved by Wolves keeper Jose Sa.
The result sees Wolves cut the gap between themselves and United to three points.
Rangnick’s men will now face Aston Villa in successive Cup and league games while Wolves have Sheffield United to negotiate in the Cup, followed by a home clash against Southampton.
