Phil Foden scored a fine hat-trick as Man City beat Aston Villa 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening. City’s victory here was also their first one against fellow top-five opposition in the Premier League this season.
Villa made six changes for this clash and went behind when Rodri rifled home Jeremy Doku’s cross on 11 minutes. A fine Villa team move however culminated in Jhon Duran equalising for the visitors with an angled finish in the 20th minute.
Foden’s free-kick on the stroke of half-time restored City’s advantage. The hosts then had goalkeeper Ortega to thank for two fine saves in quick succession early in the second half, with the German denying both Douglas Luiz and Clement Lenglet.
Foden made it 3-1 on the hour mark and his hat-trick goal seven minutes later was perhaps the best of the lot- a fine hit into the top corner. It was a superb performance from the England international as he stepped up for City in the absence of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne.
Villa will now host Brentford over the weekend while City will travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace in an early kick-off on Saturday afternoon.
