Teenagers Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns scored their first ever senior goals for Liverpool as the Reds beat Southampton 3-0 to book their spot in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s men will face arch-rivals Man Utd in the last eight of the competition. United edged Nottingham Forest 1-0 thanks to Casemiro’s late winner.
Southampton hadn’t beaten Liverpool in the FA Cup since 1925 and would’ve fancied their chances on seeing the youthful line up that Klopp chose to field. The Saints had the better of the first half, with the likes of Kamaldeen Sulemana and Sekou Mara going close.
Liverpool eventually took the lead through youngster Koumas just before half time, with his deflected shot putting them 1-0 ahead. The 18-year-old, the son of former Wales international Jason Koumas, was then replaced by Danns shortly after the hour mark.
Danns’ delicate chip just ten minutes after coming on put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, and he scored to seal the game two minutes from time with a finish from close range after Conor Bradley’s shot had been parried by Saints keeper Joe Lumley into his path.
Liverpool will now square off against Nottingham Forest this weekend while Saints will travel to Birmingham City.
