Liverpool made a stunning comeback last night against Newcastle United with a last-minute goal from new young signing Fabio Carvalho.
A packed Anfield bore witness to what would have been a frustrating night for Liverpool fans had there not been three points at the end of it.
Newcastle, for much of the night, remained resolute and frustrated the Liverpool frontline. Eddie Howe’s side initially opened the scoring, with £60 million signing Alexander Isak achieving a goal on his debut. Assisted by Sean Longstaff, Isak wheeled away in celebration towards the travelling Newcastle fans. The Mags were a goal up at the break.
Newcastle continued to frustrate through the beginning of the second half, with another goal by Isak being ruled offside. However with a well-practised run and pass from Mohammed Salah into Bobby Firminio gifted Liverpool a somewhat lucky equaliser. The game however looked set to remain at a 1-1 result later through the second half.
Luis Diaz continued to have shots, much of which got parried upwards by Nick Pope in goal. However in the 98th minute, it was a goal yard scramble from a corner, leading to the ball being suspended in the air on multiple occasions, that led to Carvalho’s shot over Pope to turn a mediocre night into a memorable one. Carvalho, the rest of the Liverpool players and the technical staff looked elated.
Despite their poor start, Liverpool fans will be best pleased with the dramatic triumphs that they have achieved over the past two games, including their drastic 9-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend. They’re new youngsters are certainly beginning to compensate for their unlucky beginnings.
Newcastle, despite leaving with no points, also look like a team growing in maturity and style. No doubt that new signing Isak will be filled with confidence after an impressive debut goal.
