Liverpool made it seven wins in as many games in the Champions League this season as they beat French outfit Lille 2-1 at Anfield. The victory saw the Reds book their spot in the Round of 16 and marked Lille’s first defeat in any competition since September last year.
The hosts took the lead in the 34th minute through Mo Salah. Kostas Tsimikas took the ball off Jonathan David in the Liverpool half and a sumptuous long pass from Curtis Jones found Salah, with the Egyptian producing a curled effort into the far post to beat LOSC goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Lille were reduced to ten men just before the hour mark when Aissa Mandi, already on a yellow, was sent off for a second bookable offence on Luis Diaz. The French side however hit back minutes later through David, who slotted home after Hakon Haraldsson’s initial shot had been blocked.
Liverpool regained the lead in the 67th minute through substitute Harvey Elliott, whose shot took a deflection off Ngal’ayel Mukau and past the helpless Chevalier in goal.
The Reds, who also lead the Premier League, will take on Ipswich this weekend. Lille, third in Ligue 1 at the time of writing, will travel to Strasbourg for their next game.
