Liverpool made it two wins out of as many games in Group E as they beat Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 at Anfield. The Reds had won 3-1 away at LASK on the opening matchday and followed it up with another two-goal margin win here against USG.
The hosts squandered two good opportunities to go ahead early in the first half, with Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez the guilty parties. Nunez’s chance to score in particular was an absolute sitter, but the Uruguayan’s effort was wide. They eventually took the lead just before half time through Ryan Gravenberch, with the Dutch medio scoring his first goal for the Reds in the process.
Trent Alexander Arnold’s initial long-range effort was spilt by USG keeper Anthony Moris and Gravenberch was the quickest to react as he slotted home from close range. The second goal however only arrived in second half stoppage time, with Diogo Jota finishing off a counter attacking move to put the result of the game beyond doubt.
Liverpool, who controversially lost 2-1 to Spurs following a VAR mistake which lead to Luis Diaz’s goal being incorrectly disallowed last weekend, will now travel to Brighton this weekend. USG, who currently lead the Belgian league, are also away from home in this weekend’s round of fixtures- they are up against Sint-Truidense.
