Leeds kept themselves in the hunt for automatic promotion as they beat local rivals Hull City 3-1 at Elland Road. The Whites came into the fixture knowing that Ipswich and Leicester had both won earlier in the day, and picked up three priceless points here thanks to late goals from Crysencio Summerville and Dan James.
The hosts went ahead on nine minutes through Sam Byram’s close range header, but Hull equalised through Fabio Carvalho. The promising Portuguese youngster, on loan from Liverpool, turned in Tyler Morton’s cross from close range.
Mateo Joseph struck the post in the second half as Leeds desperately searched for a second goal, and they eventually got it from the penalty spot after Regan Slater had fouled Summerville in the box. The forward scored the spot kick to make it 2-1 to the hosts.
Deep into stoppage time, Leeds got a third to put the result of the match beyond doubt. Hull keeper Ryan Allsop went ahead for a corner, and on the resulting counter, Dan James scored from near half-way, with his long-distance strike finding an empty net.
Leeds United will now take on Coventry this weekend while Hull will square off against Cardiff City.
