Bruno Fernandes scored a late winner as Manchester United picked up three much needed points by edging Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage. The Red Devils went into the game on the back of identical 3-0 defeats at home to arch rivals Man City and Newcastle, and looked to have settled for another winless clash before Fernandes’ stoppage time goal saved their blushes.
For Fulham, it was a disappointing result. Joao Palhinha had a great afternoon in midfield, but it was his botched clearance at the end that fell to compatriot Fernandes and allowed the latter to score from the edge of the box.
United had the ball in the back of the net early in the first half through Scott McTominay, only for VAR to disallow the goal. There were otherwise few clear-cut chances for the Red Devils in the game until Fernandes conjured his moment of quality right at the end.
Erik Ten Hag’s men will now meet Copenhagen in the Champions League away from home- they had edged the Danish side 1-0 in the reverse fixture last month. Fulham will square off against Aston Villa next weekend- the Villans suffered a surprise 2-0 loss to Forest in this round.
