A dire performance from Manchester United saw them beaten 1-0 by struggling Everton at Goodison Park. The Toffees came into this game on the back of a disappointing midweek defeat against Burnley, but United, mediocre and shambolic, were simply unable to take advantage.
The winner on the afternoon came from the boot of Anthony Gordon, whose effort took a deflection off Harry Maguire and left David de Gea helpless in the United goal. The Red Devils though were their own worst enemies- the move leading to Villa’s goal came after Nemanja Matic had lost possession in the centre of the park, with Fred’s poor pass putting the Serbian medio in trouble.
United started off decently, and the game’s two best chances before Gordon’s goal both went to Marcus Rashford, who wasn’t quite able to capitalize on them though. The visitors then lost Fred to injury, leading coach Ralf Rangnick to summon Paul Pogba off the bench.
Everton had only beaten Leeds and Newcastle under Lampard prior to the United game, and these were three priceless points in their quest for survival. For United, it was another shocking performance and more importantly, possibly the end of their Premier League top four hopes- they’re now six points behind Spurs, who beat Villa 4-0 later in the day.
