Goals from Luke Shaw and Harry Kane helped England come from behind to beat Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday evening. Kane’s goal, scored from the spot, saw the Spurs marksman go level with Sir Bobby Charlton on the all time England goal scorers list.
Switzerland took the lead in the 22nd minute through Breel Embolo, who nodded in Xherdan Shaqiri’s cross. Two minutes later, Fabian Frei unleashed a powerful half volley following a corner, but Three Lions keeper Jordan Pickford just about managed to tip it on to his bar.
Pickford was called into action again in the 39th minute, and again did well to parry Ricardo Rodriguez’s excellent effort from distance.
England got a lifeline back into the game just before half time, with Frei’s pass intercepted by debutant Kyle Walker Peters, and the ball eventually landed at the feet of Luke Shaw, who smashed home the equaliser. It was Shaw’s second goal in England colours- his first had come in the Euro 2020 final at this very venue.
Fifteen minutes from time, Steven Zuber was penalised for hand ball after a VAR check, and Yann Sommer, despite diving the right way, was powerless to stop Kane from putting the hosts 2-1 ahead.
England will now face Ivory Coast in their next friendly while the Swiss will square off against Kosovo.
