Aston Villa went level on points with Liverpool as they came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1. Unai Emery’s side were trailing 1-0 with less than a quarter of an hour to go, but goals from Alex Moreno and Ollie Watkins gave them a 2-1 win. The result, coupled with Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United, means that the Villans now have the same number of points as Jurgen Klopp’s second placed Reds.
Brentford lead 1-0 at the break thanks to Keane Lewis-Potter’s goal on the stroke of half time. They also felt they should’ve had a penalty for John McGinn’s foul on Ben Mee in the area, but on-field referee David Coote didn’t think so.
The introduction of Leon Bailey in the second half proved to be a vital turning point for Villa. Mee’s foul on the Jamaican saw the former sent off and Brentford reduced to ten men in the 70th minute. Bailey then turned provider as McGinn nodded home his cross and scored on 77 minutes.
Another header, this time from former Brentford striker Ollie Watkins, saw the visitors go 2-1 up in the 85th minute. There was late drama as Villa’s Boubacar Kamara was sent off and a host of players across both sides got booked, but Unai Emery’s side held on to pick up all three points.
