Thomas Tuchel suffered his first defeat as Bayern manager as the Bavarian giants were upset 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the German Cup by SC Freiburg. Bayern went into the game on a high, having hammered Dortmund 4-2 in the Klassiker over the weekend, but instead slumped to a shock defeat- their first ever one at home to Freiburg.
The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute through Dayot Upamecano’s header from a corner, but Freiburg levelled eight minutes later through a superb strike from Nicolas Hoffler. SCF defender Matthias Ginter made a crucial goal line clearance to deny Thomas Muller as the two teams were level going into the break.
In second half extra time, substitute Jamal Musiala was penalised for handling the ball in the box. Up stepped Lucas Holer and the 28-year-old forward sent Yann Sommer the wrong way to seal a famous victory for the visitors.
Freiburg were runners up in the Pokal last season, having gone down to Leipzig in the final, and will be hoping to go one better this year after eliminating Bayern to qualify for the semis.
Bayern will have an immediate chance at revenge the score when the two sides meet again in the Bundesliga this weekend.
