Eddie Nketiah scored a brace as Arsenal edged in-form Manchester United 3-2 at the Emirates on Sunday evening. The result means that Mikel Arteta’s side have already hit the 50-point mark halfway through the season, five more than what the Invincibles of 2003/04 had achieved at the same stage of their campaign.
Manchester United have been the only team to beat Arsenal in the league so far this season and they took the lead here through a stunner from Marcus Rashford. The Gunners however equalised six minutes later, with Nketiah taking advantage of some poor defending from Aaron Wan-Bissaka to nod home Granit Xhaka’s excellent cross.
The hosts went 2-1 up after the interval through Bukayo Saka’s fine long-range finish, although the Red Devils equalised quickly through Lisandro Martinez, with the Argentine showing great composure to head one over for his first goal in United colours.
Erik Ten Hag’s men were without the suspended Casemiro in the middle of the park, and Arsenal dominated both possession and shots as they went in search for the winner. It eventually came in the 90th minute through Nketiah. United thought Zinchenko and Nketiah were offside in the buildup, but VAR thought otherwise, and it was the Gunners who deservedly walked away with all three points at the final whistle.
Arsenal restored their five-point lead over second-placed City, who beat Wolves 3-0 earlier in the day at the Etihad.
