Arsenal took a massive step towards qualifying for the next round of the Champions League as they beat AS Monaco 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The two teams had begun the matchday level on points, but after the result, the Gunners are now third in the table, while ASM have slipped to 16th in the standings.
Arsenal started brightly and Gabriel Jesus had a couple of very decent chances, only to be thwarted by the brilliance of Radoslaw Majecki in the Monaco goal. However, the Gunners’ pressure finally told, with young left back Myles Lewis-Skelly’s pinpoint pass finding Jesus, who fired it across goal for Bukayo Saka to complete an easy finish at the far post.
Monaco kept the Gunners at bay and even had some decent opportunities of their own, with ASM’s former Premier League based players in Thilo Kehrer and Takumi Minamino both coming close to equalising. However, a mix-up between Majecki and central defender Mohammed Salisu saw Kai Havertz pounce and Saka duly did the rest to make it 2-0 on 78 minutes.
Havertz then put himself on the scoresheet towards the end of the game as the Gunners completed a convincing victory. Mikel Arteta’s men will now host Everton this weekend in the league.
