Young Ajax defender Jorrel Hato had an evening to forget as reigning European champions Spain snatched a last-gasp draw against the Netherlands in Rotterdam.
The teenager made two big mistakes on the evening- the first saw him dispossessed by Lamine Yamal in the build-up to Spain’s opener, scored by Nico Williams on 9 minutes. The second saw him sent off in the 81st minute for a challenge on opposite number Robin le Normand which saw the Dutch have to play the remainder of the game with ten men, and they eventually conceded a late equaliser in stoppage time.
Both the Dutch goals were quality and Jeremie Frimpong had a big role to play in both as he constantly troubled Spain left back Marc Cucurella.
The first was scored by Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, while the second was netted by Tijjani Reijnders just after the interval. Frimpong and Reijnders had also combined for an earlier chance that saw the latter hit the crossbar.
Spain’s late equaliser had an element of fortune about it- Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen couldn’t hold on to Nico Williams’ first-time shot, and the ball fell straight to substitute Mikel Merino, and the Arsenal midfielder made no mistake from close range.
