The January clash, though not a classic, provided Arsenal a chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool, adding to Spurs’ woes. The atmosphere at the Emirates was charged, with fans energised. This energy fueled Arsenal, who dominated from the outset.
Much like last season’s encounter, Arsenal controlled possession and disrupted Tottenham’s attempts to build from the back. Spurs’ young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky faced intense pressure, narrowly avoiding early mistakes. Despite Arsenal’s relentless pressure, they couldn’t capitalise early. Leandro Trossard had the best chance, but his effort was blocked by Radu Dragusin after a Declan Rice cross.
Tottenham briefly found relief as Djed Spence and Pape Sarr sparked counterattacks, leading to a deflected Son Heung-min goal off William Saliba, putting Spurs ahead.
However, Arsenal’s set-piece prowess soon paid off. Declan Rice’s delivery was turned in by Dominic Solanke, leveling the score. Before the break, Trossard’s goal, his first since November, completed the turnaround, punishing Yves Bissouma’s error with a powerful shot past Kinsky.
In the second half, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou introduced James Maddison and Brennan Johnson to inject creativity and pace. The game took on a frantic, end-to-end rhythm, but Arsenal regained control after the hour mark.
Despite Tottenham’s efforts, Arsenal’s defense, among the league’s best, held firm. The Gunners secured a vital 2-1 victory, maintaining their defensive resilience in the final stages.
