Newcastle 4-1 PSG: Champions League Match Result & Report

Newcastle United produced an impressive performance as they hammered 2020 finalists Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 at St. James Park. The fixture was the Magpies’ first at home in the Champions League since 2003, and Eddie Howe’s men made it an evening to remember for the 52,009 in attendance on Tyneside.

An error from Marquinhos saw Newcastle draw first blood in the 17th minute, with Miguel Almiron’s precise finish putting them 1-0 up. It became 2-0 six minutes before the interval as Dan Burn’s header was allowed after a lengthy offside check.

Any hopes PSG might have had of a comeback were quashed five minutes after the break as Sean Longstaff scored beating Gianluigi Donnarumma from a tight angle. Lucas Hernandez pulled one back for the visitors with a header of his own, but Fabian Schar’s stunning late strike restored the Magpies’ three-goal advantage and gave them a 4-1 victory.

Despite having 70% possession, PSG struggled to impose themselves on the game, with Kylian Mbappe reduced to a peripheral figure. The result now sees Newcastle go top of Group F– dubbed the Group of Death, after two matchdays, with Milan and Dortmund playing out a goalless stalemate in the other fixture.
