Ukraine 1-1 England: Euro 2024 qualifier Match Report

England dropped points for the first time in Euro 2024 qualifying as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ukraine.

The Group C fixture was played in the Polish city of Wroclaw, but there were plenty of support for Ukraine, and it was Serhiy Rebrov’s side who took the lead, with Arsenal medio Oleksandr Zinchenko slotting home from close range in the 26th minute.

England didn’t offer much in terms of attack, and it needed a fantastic piece of vision from Harry Kane to bring them level. The Three Lions skipper, who moved to Bayern earlier this summer, produced a fine diagonal ball to find right back Kyle Walker, who scored his first senior international goal to equalise for the visitors.

Ukraine had just one other shot apart from the Zinchenko one that lead to their goal. England had 11 of their own, but only four of them were on target.

Southgate made only one change to the side that had beaten North Macedonia 7-0 in June, with James Maddison starting on the left wing ahead of Marcus Rashford. Both Rashford and Phil Foden were brought off the bench, but they couldn’t score to find the winning goal either, and England had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

England still remain comfortably on course for qualification, with Italy dropping points to North Macedonia in the other group game.
